3 Types of Two-Way Radio Earpieces

by KELCOM Radio Staff / Monday, 23 January 2017 / Published in Blog, Digital Two-Way Radios, Government, Hospitality and Restaurant, Latest News, Manufacturing and Warehousing, Property Management, Public Safety, Retail and Pharmacy

This blog post will go into detail to explain the difference between the three styles of two-way radio earpieces and wires that you can use.

It will also discuss the function of each and how they are properly worn.

This depends on how much discretion you need in your job.

Benefits to Two-Way Radio Earpieces

Here are just some of the benefits that earpieces provide for two-way radio users:

  • Earpieces provide discrete communication
  • You can hear and be heard clearly
  • There is hands-free operation from radios
  • Lightweight and convenient
  • If you need to move quickly, you won’t be held back by equipment

Industries That Use Radio Earpieces

These are just some of the industries that use earpieces in their day-to-day operation:

  • Security
  • Hotels
  • Bars and Restaurants
  • Administration
  • Retail
  • Law enforcement

Difference Between the 3 Types of Radio Earpieces

One-wire earpieces can be used in retail and hospitality environments.

1-Wire Earpiece

This is a simple and easy-to-use earpiece.

From the connector on a two-way radio, one wire leads to a push-to-talk (PTT) microphone using an in-line clip.

The wire continues up to the earpiece.

To send a broadcast, you simply press the PTT button and talk.

One-wire earpieces are typically worn over clothing.

This type of earpiece is perfect for users requiring a simple, easy-to-use configuration.

2-Wire Earpiece

A two-wire earpiece gives you more flexibility than the one-wire.

There is one wire which connects to a microphone that you clip onto a shirt sleeve.

The other wire connects to the earpiece, usually running under your clothing and out of the collar.

To talk, you would raise your hand to your mouth and press the PTT button.

This earpiece is commonly referred to as the security or FBI-style earpiece as it provides a lot of discretion and flexibility for the wearer.

3-Wire Earpiece

Three-wire earpieces are favoured by security personnel.

A three-wire earpiece gives you the most discretion and security.

There are many types of three-wire earpieces available on the market including PTT as well as Bluetooth.

However, their functionality remains the same.

This earpiece contains 3 wires, the first of which leads to a barrel-style PTT mic, usually under your clothing.

It is then clipped inside the cuff of a long-sleeve shirt or jacket.

The second wire is also hidden under clothing and leads up to the earpiece from the radio out of your collar.

The third wire also runs under your clothing around the front to a hidden microphone which is clipped under the collar inside of a long sleeve shirt.

To broadcast, you would press the PTT button with your thumb and talk.

Out of the three types of earpieces, this is the most discrete option favoured in undercover operations.

Conclusion

Earpieces are used by many different industries ranging from hospitality to security to stay in touch with other team members.

Depending on your use, you may need to get 1- or 2-wire earpieces if you work in hospitality or retail, or a 2- or 3-wire earpiece if you are conducing covert operations and value discretion.
