Top 6 Things to Look for in a Broken Two-Way Radio

If your radio is broken, you may be able to fix it. Our blog post shows you 6 common problems you can diagnose.

Your two-way radios are designed to support your workforce. However, due to the nature of business, you man end up with a broken radio due to factors such as your working environment or normal wear and tear.

This blog will examine 6 common problems that you should keep an eye out for with your radios and the do’s and don’ts of diagnosing each issue.

Some of these can be simply fixed while others require the assistance of a service technician.

Damaged or Cracked Front and Rear Housing

One of the most common problems customers have is having damaged or cracked front or rear housing.

Using tape to hold the radio together is not recommended, as the tape will often cover the speaker mic and cause further communication issues.

It’s recommended that a carrying case be provided for each radio to guard against fall damage and other mishaps. This will ensure your radios last longer and function at their best.

Damaged or Old Battery

A radio is only as good as its power source. Over the life of any battery, voltage drop will occur resulting in shorter life in each charge cycle. If you’re experiencing difficulties with intermittent shut-offs or bad transmission, it may be time to change out an old or damaged battery.

Depending on usage, batteries should be replaced routinely every 2 years or as soon as signs of degradation begin to show.

Broken Antenna

If you’re getting garbled transmissions or excessive static, it may be the result of damage to a radio’s antenna. To assess whether the antenna is working properly, simply unscrew and swap it out for the antenna of a working radio.

Note that trying to repair a broken antenna yourself with tape or other means is unlikely to correct the problem. A replacement antenna is dependable and affordable to purchase.

If you have a broken radio with an LCD display is damaged, you may need to get it professionally repaired. Consider a carrying case to protect your investment.

Damaged LCD Display

Your radio’s LCD display is critical for accessing a range of options and settings. When the screen is compromised, it may show visible cracks or distorted text. In some cases, the entire display will appear either blacked-out or whited- out completely.

Correcting a damaged LCD will require a service technician to install a replacement screen.

Damaged or Broken Accessories

If you are using any accessories with your radio, including a speaker mic or headset, damage to those add-ons may be the cause of communication issues.

Replacement accessories are inexpensive when compared to replacing the radio itself, so always check your extra hardware as a possible cause for any problems. Many communication issues can be prevented with timely replacement of damaged parts.

Volume Control / On-Off Switch Failure

If a radio seems to be performing unreliably, it may be the result of a broken switch.

In some cases, the volume control / on-off switch will fail causing a radio to turn off and on without warning. To correct this problem, take the radio out of service immediately and contact a service technician.

Conclusion

These are just some of the common problems that users have with their two-way radios. In some cases, you can fix the problem yourself but others require the assistance of a two-way radio technician. If you would like to get your radio examined or fixed, contact our KELCOM two-way radio experts today.
